Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council have urged people in the borough to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity like this.

The letter, which was headed with the TMBC logo, was typed out and included the registration of the car.

It said the offence was an illegally parked vehicle which wasn't in its "designated bay".

The owner of the vehicle was told they faced a £120 fine which would be reduced to £60 if paid within two weeks.

An email, which appeared to belong to the local authority, and mobile number was left at the bottom of the page.

TMBC have only received one complaint about the scam so far.

A spokesman said: "This is the only instance we are aware of but are working with Kent Police to ascertain whether other attempts to trick people out of money have been made.

"We’d urge anyone with information to get in touch with us or with the police.

"Please be aware that our parking team don’t issue notices that look like this and it has been reported to Kent Police – if you’ve been targeted by this scam or have any doubts about a penalty notice you can email us at parking.office@tmbc.gov.uk."

Kent Police have been contacted for more information.
