McDonald’s has launched an investigation following the emergence of a clip online appearing to show a customer “car-surfing” through one of its drive thrus.
In the video, which was posted to TikTok, the young thrill-seeker can be seen riding on top of the bonnet of the vehicle as she makes her way around the fast food chain’s takeaway service in Cannon Lane, Tonbridge.
The clip, which was posted two days ago, shows the female customer lying on her front on the front of the car as it is being driven through the premises.
Staff members serving her can be seen smiling and laughing throughout as her friend, who is behind the wheel driving, films the antics as they pass each window.
But shocked viewers online have branded the “car-surfing” stunt "dangerous” and “irresponsible” and believe staff should not be encouraging the behaviour seen online.
McDonald’s says it is investigating and will be reminding the restaurant team of the “correct procedures” to address any incidents of this nature.
However, a concerned viewer, who had the TikTok video appear on his feed doesn’t believe the stunt is being taken seriously enough.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, added: “These crazes take hold with youngsters doing silly things – whether it's choking on a bit of cinnamon or what have you, kids copy kids.
“If they think the staff at McDonald's are going to be complicit in that and find it humorous, they’re more likely to do it.”
He reported it via the McDonald’s customer service line yesterday (November 26) and was told the matter would be relayed to head office and dealt with internally.
But, he adds: “They didn’t even ask for any details about the video even to see if there is one or not – how can you do an investigation on something you don’t know the date or time of.
“I don’t feel McDonalds are taking it seriously at all.”
A spokesperson for the fast food company said: “We are aware of this incident, and an investigation is currently underway.
“The safety of our people and our customers is our priority, and any behaviour that puts this at risk is unacceptable.
“We will be reminding the restaurant team of the correct procedures to address any incidents of this nature in our Drive Thru, to ensure the professional standards we expect are being met.”
Car surfing involves riding on the outside of a moving vehicle being driven by another person.
Police said the video has not been reported to them.
