The history of a woodland area in Haysden Country Park was commemorated with the unveiling of a new sign on Tuesday morning.

It celebrates the creation of the Heusenstamm Friendship Wood, which was planted after the great storm of 1987.

Three years earlier Tonbridge became twinned with Heusenstamm, a town in central Germany, and following the storm it donated 400 saplings, including oak, lime, ash and wild cherry.

The trees were planted on the site of the park’s Old Weir Pool and the new woodland area was named to celebrate the friendship between the two places.

Cllr David Cure, a representative for the Judd ward, said: “Many thanks to the Heusenstamm Friendship Circle for their help in creating this beautiful sign, which provides a fascinating insight into how the Woodland was created at Haysden Country Park and marks many years of friendship with our twin town.”
