Tonbridge AC's Tom Bosworth has broken the British 10k race walk record in spectacular fashion on Sunday.

The 25-year-old set a new best of 39mins 36secs in the Molly Barnett Open & Winter Race Walk Challenge in Coventry - breaking the previous record of 40.17 by Chris Maddocks that was set in 1989, before Bosworth was born!

Bosworth said: "It was an honour for me to set a new British record. A big target for me was to set new records for the 10k and 20k.

"Chris is a legend of the event, a five-time Olympian, and I am ecstatic to break a record that has stood for 26 years by such a massive margin as 41 seconds.

"The conditions were awful and I didn’t feel good at all, but my fitness showed through, there is more where that has come from."

Bosworth, who trains with coach Andi Drake at the National Race Walking Centre at Leeds Beckett University, spent three weeks training in Spain and added: "This record is for all of those people who supported my campaign for funds to go and do some warm weather training.

"Some people donated a few pounds, some a hundred and I’m grateful to everyone of them and I want them to know that I couldn’t have achieved this without them.

"The benefits of warm weather training are here for all to see and going forward it would be great if I could get a sponsor or two to help me meet my training costs, so that I can realise my full potential."
