Alex Chalke has reached the pinnacle of his sport as he became a European kickboxing champion.

Hildenborough resident Chalke’s road to victory in the veterans’ over-94k light contact division began with a decisive win in the first round in Greece.

The final, however, proved a much tougher challenge.

Chalke faced Germany’s national champion - a seasoned fighter with multiple European and international titles - but, despite the physical toll, adapted and overcame his opponent.

He said: “This title means everything. It’s the result of years of training, sacrifice and passion for kickboxing. I’m proud to bring this victory home.”

Chalke’s kickboxing journey began several years ago at Miles Martial Arts - a Hildenborough-based taekwondo and kickboxing club - where he enrolled after his son took up the sport.

After returning to kickboxing, aged 45, Chalke proved that age is no barrier.

“People often think we’re too old to start a new sport,” Chalke said. “But I believe age is just a number.

“Returning to kickboxing felt right and it’s been an incredible journey.”

A significant part of Chalke’s success has been his relationship with Benn Fillingham, the head instructor at Miles Martial Arts and a fellow Team GB competitor.

“We’ve been on this journey together and his unwavering support has been integral to my progression in kickboxing,” said Chalke.

“I hope people young and old see our achievements and are inspired to follow in our footsteps.”
