Tonbridge Juddians succumbed to a 59-10 National League 1 defeat at the hands of high-flying Cambridge on Saturday.
The away side started the fastest as they dominated the early exchanges and put Judds on the back foot. This resulted in an early well-taken try in the right-hand corner and the conversion to match on an afternoon when Cambridge's goal kickers enjoyed a 100% record from the tee.
Juddians grew into the contest for the remainder of the half and built some field position and possession and when they won a penalty Tom White slotted home to narrow the gap.
The rest of the first half was relatively even in terms of territory, but TJs failed to supply the cutting edge required to open up a stubborn defence.
Conversely, Cambridge were much more clinical with their chances and took advantage of two lapses in the tackle area. Two tries followed, both converted, and suddenly TJs went into the break with an 18-point deficit.
Things quickly unravelled in the second half when Perry Parker saw red after a reckless incident off the ball and that ended the game as a contest.
White was able to pick up a well-read intercept on the hour mark for a Tonbridge try, but it was nothing more than a consolation.
Tonbridge return to league action on March 26 with a trip to Darlington Mowden Park.
