Olympic boxer Anthony Ogogo is set to replace Lizzy Yarnold as the VIP cutting the ribbon on a new supermarket in Tunbridge Wells.

The Aldi store, in the Great Lodge Retail Park, on Longfield Road, is set to welcome shoppers through its doors for the first time on Thursday, October 31 at 8am.

The retired professional middleweight boxer, who won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games, will step in to declare the store officially open.

Ogogo, who is from Lowestoft in Suffolk, said: “I’m so excited to open the new store, it will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its endless support of Team GB.”

The shop was previously going to be opened by Lizzy Yarnold, the Olympic skeleton race gold medallist who grew up in nearby West Kingsdown, but the choice of athlete was altered this week.

The reason for the change has not been revealed.

There will be exclusive offers running throughout the day and the first 30 customers through the doors will receive a free bag of fresh fruit and vegetables.

It is the first Aldi to come to the town.

Local charities and food banks are also encouraged to register with the store's 'neighbourly' scheme, to receive regular donations of leftover food from the supermarket.

Any charities in Tunbridge Wells that would like to partner up with the new Aldi should email aldi@neighbourly.com.

The store will be open Monday to Saturday 8am to10pm and and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
