Tunbridge Wells locals Katy Salters and Lucia Rae have organised the book sale in a bid to raise money to fund Tomosynthesis, new state-of-the art scanning equipment which is reported to detect 28% more cancers and develop the diagnosis of breast cancer.

The charity has so far raised £100,000 of an estimated £300,000 needed to purchase and fit the equipment.

Katy, 34 said: "Our mission is to reach out to the women in the local community and to help Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone hospitals become the centres of excellence they deserve to be.

"Breast Cancer Kent is a fantastic local charity but not very well known in the Tunbridge Wells area yet.

"A lot of breast cancer patients from Tunbridge Wells go to Maidstone for treatment, including close family members of ours."

Breast Cancer Kent was originally set up in 1996 and is now run by oncologists at Maidstone Hospital.

It raises money in a bid to help anyone affected by breast cancer in the Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone NHS Trust catchment area.

Money previously raised by the charity has been used to by a specialist study day for the breast care nurses, taxis for elderly women after a late evening clinic and state-of-the-art machinery.

"By being a visible presence in the community we can show the optimistic face of breast cancer and help women keep well and stay well" - Katy Salters

Breast Cancer Kent is also planning a series of wellness days in the local community so that oncologists, dietitians and keep fit experts can give anyone who has been affected by breast cancer the latest information and research about how best to stay well.

Frances Rae, a Tunbridge Wells representative of Breast Cancer Kent, said: "By being a visible presence in the community we can show the optimistic face of breast cancer and help women keep well and stay well.

"Yes, it is about collecting money but it’s about so much more. It’s about reaching out and communicating with the women of Kent."

The book sale will be held today at the Toc H Hall, 37 Little Mt Sion in Tunbridge Wells between 1pm and 4pm.
