Two cars are set to be available for members of the public to hire as part of a new car club pilot scheme in Kent.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council is trialling the project, with a social enterprise company, Co-wheels, who will invest any profit back into the scheme.

The pilot begins in the Tunbridge Wells borough from Tuesday and members can use the Toyota Aygos that will be parked in designated bays on Mount Pleasant Road in the centre of the town.

Drivers can book a car online for short or long distance journeys for as little as 30 minutes or as long as 10 days.

They will either pay £3.75 per hour or a day rate of £17.50 plus 13p per mile.

Anyone wanting to be a Co-wheels car club member needs to register online and pay a one-off registration fee of £25 and corporate accounts can be set up by contacting the company direct.

The council is the first borough authority in the county to offer this kind of car club and it is at no cost to the council taxpayer.

The designated bays are opposite the Town Hall, opposite Cote Brasserie, opposite the train station and outside Russell & Bromley.

The council hopes that the scheme will offer residents an alternative to owning a car and provide them with the convenience of a car without any of the inconvenience; no road tax or fuel to pay and no MOT or car service required.
