Bogus charity workers tried to steal a watch from a pensioner near Tunbridge Wells.
Detectives are appealing for information after the victim was approached by two women shortly before noon on Saturday.
It was reported he was getting out of a car close to the A26 London Road and Rocks Hollow Gardens.
The suspects gestured to pieces of paper they were holding, intimating they were seeking donations for a hospital to help people who were deaf or blind.
Whilst pointing to the documents, one of the suspects held the victim’s arm and attempted to remove his watch.
The timepiece was initially taken but dropped when the victim challenged them.
Both suspects then ran away and got into a car parked nearby which was driven away by a third person. The vehicle was either a white or silver VW Golf.
One of the would-be thieves is white, aged around 16, slim and 5ft tall and wore dark clothing.
The second suspect is also white, around 20, with a broader build and of similar height.
She had short dark hair and dark clothing. She also wore a face mask. Both are reported to have spoken with an Eastern European accent.
DI Jim Farley said: "It is possible these people may have targeted other potential victims in and around the Tunbridge Wells area and we are urging anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious to contact us.
"We are also asking relatives and neighbours to keep an eye out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may have unwelcome visitors to their doors."
