Something surprisingly seedy has been revealed about a town normally known for its pretty streets and royal title.

Tunbridge Wells has been named the most adulterous town in Kent and the 15th highest in the UK.

With 1,445 adulterers, 3.01% of the borough’s adult population is currently searching for something more than marriage can offer.

And 10 more of the county's towns - Deal, Rochester, Dover, Sevenoaks, Gravesend, Northfleet, Folkestone, Sittingbourne, Whitstable and Ramsgate - appear in the top 150 most unfaithful locations, making Kent one of the most scandalous regions in the entire country.

With the infidelity index compiled by leading dating website for married people IllicitEncounters.com, postal addresses of users are mapped and compared against each location's total adult population.

Deal comes closest to Tunbridge Wells, as it finds itself in 29th place overall in the UK with 2.69% of its adult population cheating.

Rochester and Dover occupy 35th and 42nd place respectively, with 2.63% and 2.53%.

Not far behind in 45th place with 2.51% is Sevenoaks, while Gravesend comes in at 74th with 2.13%.

Northfleet and Folkestone are 76th and 77th respectively, with cheating populations of 2.10% and 2.09%.

Gillingham is the most faithful town in Kent with only 0.75% of its adult population cheating.

In terms of cities, Canterbury comes in 15th place out of a possible 52.

However, there is some good news - Kent is getting more faithful each year despite many of the towns being high in the ranking.

The site's spokesperson, Jessica Leoni, said: "We often find that in today’s economy, the rise in house prices - particularly in the South - scare people away from divorce.

“So, when a marriage often reaches its natural conclusion, instead of separating, alternatives are sought, and the people of Kent are doing so in their absolute droves."
