17:00, 28 August 2015

After over thirty years of delivering milk to customers in Tunbridge Wells a milkman is preparing to drive his float for the final time.

Julian Kearvell estimatse he has deliver over 4.5 million pints of milk and walked thousands of miles in all weathers.

Like many of his fellow milkmen and women, Mr Kearvell sees himself as being very much part of the community as he's always been based at the milk&more depot in Tunbridge Wells.

The 61-year-old got to know his customers well which is one of the reasons he has been awarded Depot Franchisee of the Year twice.

During Mr Kearvell's career as a milkman he has seen a few changes including the increase in the range of goods on offer and the way customers can now pay and order online. The St John's resident said: "When I started as a milkman we delivered mostly milk, cream and other dairy foods but nowadays we also sell a wide range of groceries and even compost bags for the garden.

"The service is really appreciated by both young and old and is especially important for the housebound as well as busy families. I shall be really sorry to say goodbye to my customers but the occasional lie in will be nice."

Mr Kearvell, who delivers in St Peter's, Sherwood and St James, says he loves his job because his favourite time of the day is early morning.

Mr Kearvell will drive his milk float for his final round on Saturday.

Depot manager, Nick Jasper, said: “Julian has been an exemplary member of the team – totally reliable and dedicated to ensuring his customers get the best possible service. We shall miss him but wish him all the best in his retirement.”
