A STRETCH of the A21 has been labelled "a dangerous and hazardous blackspot" by Tunbridge Wells MP Archie Norman.

He spoke after a crash claimed the life of Tunbridge Wells motorcyclist Edward Leslie, 26. The accident, on Friday July 19, happened at the junction with Lady Oak Lane, between Lamberhurst and Flimwell.

Four days later a driver was taken to hospital after his van and a lorry were in collision at the junction with Goudhurst Road at Lamberhurst.

And the following Friday the London-bound carriageway was closed when firefighters were called to an abandoned car dumped yards from residents' homes between Flimwell and Lamberhurst at 11.50pm. No-one was hurt.

Mr Norman said: "Enough is enough. In just two years we have seen some improved signage and green and white paint on the roads. But this is a dangerous and hazardous blackspot. It remains a frightening and treacherous stretch of road with an accident record that goes up weekly."

The Tory MP has now written to Kent Police, the Highways Agency and Kent County Council demanding to know when action will be taken on the "lethal" road. "I will be arranging a meeting in September for them to tell me and residents what constructive approach they plan to take," he said.

Mr Norman is calling for a reduction to the 70mph speed limit, speed cameras, tighter police enforcements for speeding traffic and improved lighting - measures also demanded by members of the A21 Action Group. There have been four fatal accidents between Flimwell and Lamberhurst in the last two years.
