Police appeal for witnesses after a 95-year-old man dies in a collision with a van in London Road in Southborough near Tesco
00:00, 30 December 2014
Tributes have been paid to a much loved war veteran who was killed after being hit by a van in Southborough.
Originally from Bury in Greater Manchester, Ted Barlow, 95, had lived in the town since 1999.
Today his family issued a tribute saying: "Ted served in the RAF in North Africa and Italy in the Second World War after graduating from Cambridge University.
"He was a keen sportsman, particularly rugby union, skiing and, throughout his life, golf.
"Ted was widowed in 2013 and was much loved by all his friends and family, both locally and in Bury. He will be greatly missed."
Mr Barlow died at the scene following a collision on Monday, which involved a white Ford Transit van.
Police, paramedics and air ambulance were called to A26 London Road in Southborough shortly before 10.30am.
It happened near the junction with Springfield Road by Tesco.
The road was shut in both directions so the air ambulance could land and drivers were advised to use other routes.
It reopened nearly five hours later, after officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit had carried out their initial enquiries.
Detective Constable David Holmes is appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw the van or pedestrian before the incident to come forward.
