At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, Rorie Evans, an ex-Gurkha soldier, arrived at the Memorial Sculpture in Victoria Cross Grove, Dunorlan Park, in Tunbridge Wells and began playing a selection of tunes, including Highland Cathedral, on his bagpipes to note Armistice Day.

Following on from a short wreath-laying service at the Tunbridge Wells War Memorial outside the Town Hall, civic dignitaries arrived at the Victoria Cross Grove just before 11.30am.

John Cohen, the Royal British Legion’s leader and organiser of the event, the Mayor, Cllr Chris Woodward and author Richard Snow were joined by five buglers from TS Brilliant led by Lt Cmdr Jon Vanns, and by the Royal British Legion Standard Bearer Duncan Sage for a service lasting about 15 minutes, during which Mr Snow read out the names of the fallen recorded on the plaque in the Grove.

The buglers played the Last Post, during which the RBL standard was lowered, followed by a two-minute silence and Reveille.

The Mayor laid a wreath at the Memorial Sculpture.

Joan Hamilton-Smith was among the members of the public who attended. She said: "It was a wonderful way to remember all those who, over many conflicts, paid the ultimate price. And quite emotional for me."

The Victoria Cross Grove is dedicated to the 10 men from Tunbridge Wells who have won the Victoria Cross for valour.

Mr Snow has written a book on them: Ten Brave Men and True.
