A 19-year-old man has been handed a 14 month jail sentence after a police chase in Tunbridge Wells.

Shamim Miah was arrested on July 25 after he fled down an alleyway after being spotted carrying out a drug deal by plain clothed officers.

Police caught and arrested Miah, who was found in possession of almost 19 grams of cannabis, close to Addison Road.

Miah, formerly of South View Road, had divided the amount into 10 separate bags as well as a number of cling film wraps.

He had tried to hide the drugs by concealing them in a shoulder bag, which he threw into undergrowth as he was being chased.

The teenager originally denied dealing drugs on the street before he was arrested and told officers that an ‘unknown male’ had approached him asking for change.

He later changed this version of events and admitted selling cannabis in a deal worth £10.

Miah was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court last Wednesdayhaving previously pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

He was imprisoned for 14 months at a young offenders' institution after also breaching a previously imposed suspended sentence, for another drugs related offence.

Tunbridge Wells Chief Inspector, Dave Patesaid: "I have said time and time again, that we will not tolerate people dealing drugs in this town and I’m delighted that we have been able to secure yet another successful conviction.

"We have been relentlessly targeting people involved in the use and supply of drugs for many months and we are now really seeing the results of this hard work.

"A significant number of criminals have been removed from our streets and are now in prison. This case is yet another reminder to criminals that as well as uniformed patrols, we constantly deploy plain clothes police officers who will find and arrest you if you deal drugs in Tunbridge Wells."
