Person hit by train at High Brooms railway station in Tunbridge Wells

A man has been struck by a train and killed on the line near High Brooms railway station in Tunbridge Wells.

A Southeastern spokesman said the driver of the 15.45 London Charing Cross to Hastings service saw the man emerge from undergrowth as the train approached the station and step onto the line, but there was not time to brake.

The incident happened at about 4.30pm on Saturday. The train had been due to stop at High Brooms.

Ambulance staff were called, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Passengers initially had to stay on board the train until helped off by police.

Train services were suspended in both directions with replacement buses laid on between Wadhurst and Tonbridge. The lines were fully re-opened at 7.30pm.

Southeastern said it was carrying out an investigation and its findings would be reported to the coroner.

The name of the dead man has not yet been released.
