The A21 was closed following a serious crash.
Police shut the dual carriageway on the border of Kent and East Sussex, after two vehicles collided.
The scene was cordoned off in both directions between Flimwell and Cooper's Corner, in East Sussex.
A National Highways spokesman warned "information from the scene indicates that the closure will be protracted".
Motorists travelling south were asked to divert into Kent, passing through Hawkhurst, onto the A229 southbound, before re-joining the A21 at Cooper's Corner.
The road is now open.
