Residents in Tunbridge Wells are reminded to be on their guard against rogue traders following reports of a bizarre scam involving a dead squirrel.
Police have received a number of reports about suspicious activity in the town, where a man has been knocking on doors offering roof repairs.
After inspecting the roof the man claims the property has an infestation of squirrels which are causing damage. It is reported he then tries to claim money to get rid of the infestation and for other unnecessary work.
On one occasion the man is reported to have produced a dead squirrel and demanded £300 from the homeowner.
The victim later got their roof inspected by a reputable company which verified there had been no infestation or damage which could have been caused by squirrels. Other suspicious incidents have recently been reported in areas including Sandhurst Road and Ferndale.
Sgt Andy Miller said: "This man targets people by cold calling and demanding cash up front. Work then carried out is either minimal, or nothing has been done at all.
"We are continuing to investigate a number of complaints related to these incidents and our advice remains the same for anyone dealing with cold callers.
"Do not deal with people who knock on your door offering work on your home or garden and if you have any concerns about their behaviour call the police."
Kent Police is reminding resident of steps to take to deter rogue traders, who may also offer services such as cleaning driveways or roof and guttering repairs. For more, click here.
