ONE of the heroes of England's 1966 World Cup win, Sir Geoff Hurst, was guest of honour at a sporting dinner in Tunbridge Wells.

Sir Geoff, the only man ever to have scored a World Cup final hat-trick, was at the Spa Hotel dinner in aid of Bells Yew Green Cricket Club near Tunbridge Wells.

Speaking on the eve of England's World Cup exit at the hands of Brazil, the former West Ham striker revealed that Sir Alf Ramsey's side of '66 received a match fee of just £60 for their historic Wembley win over West Germany and a bonus of £22,000 which was shared among the 22-man squad.

Following another speech by former Lancashire and England cricket Graham Fowler, the club auctioned a replica red England shirt signed by Sir Geoff for £650, proceeds from which will help Bells Yew Green buy a new long-term lease on their picturesque ground.
