Members of a gym in Marden are clocking up the lockdown miles to raise money for the village food bank.
Tom Jarrett, founder of Brigade Gym, challenged members to run or walk 837 miles - the equivalent of the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats in just six weeks. The challenge end this Sunday.
The group aim to raise at least £837 in sponsorship for their Miles for Marden Food Bank challenge.
Mr Jarrett, a former Royal Marine who served with 45 Commando in Afghanistan said: “I know some families are experiencing tough times at the moment and I wanted to do something to help the food bank which does such an amazing job supporting the community.
“We are very proud of our part in the village and I knew Brigade members could rise to the challenge.
"They’ve been out the rain, cold and now snow clocking up the miles and the donations!
“They’ve been out running; they’ve been dog walking, they've been taking their kids with them, walking around their gardens and on treadmills when they’ve been in isolation. They are smashing it.”
So far the group have collectively notched up more than 700 miles and £700 of donations.
Mr Jarrett, 30, opened his fitness centre in Pattenden Lane, Marden, in October last year after running outdoor bootcamps in the village over the summer.
He said: “It was certainly an interesting time to start a new business.
“Brigade Gym has been closed due to lockdown more than it has been open, so alongside our live Zoom workouts, challenges like this one are really important to help keep members fit and healthy and keep spirits high.
"Exercise is crucial for both physical and mental wellbeing so our Miles for Marden Foodbank challenge not only helps the community, but also helps our members too."
