Staff at Go Ape in Bedgebury literally went bananas in their charity relay.

Employees from the 28 sites across the county took part in the 'Big Banana Relay' to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The relay saw the ‘Big Banana’ travel 1823 miles across the UK with the Go Ape gorillas using a range of quirky transport methods.

The event set off from Leeds Castle on Saturday with the ‘Big Banana’ being flown to the Bedgebury site by staff member, Seb Powderham.

19 year old Seb worked at Go Ape to help pay for his pilot’s lessons and has been flying for six months with his private licence.

To boost fundraising efforts and celebrate the relay, staff heled a charity party complete with banana hut, cake sales, rafles and a chance to throw sponges at some gorillas.

Rebecca Mayhew, co-founder and director of Go Ape, said: “"We are proud to support Teenage Cancer Trust and that our Go Ape Team have launched this fantastic fundraising campaign to raise money and have fun while the ‘big banana’ travels 1382 miles around our locations in the UK.”

Director of fundraising for Teenage Cancer Trust, Kate Collins said: “Putting the fun back into fundraising, events like the Big Banana Relay support our work in improving the quality of life and chances of survival for young people with cancer aged 13 to 24.

"The money will help us fund and build specialist units in NHS hospitals and provide dedicated staff, bringing young people together so they can be treated by teenage cancer experts in the best place for them.”

Teenage Cancer Trust has been selected by Go Ape staff as its main charity for 2014 and so far the team has raised £945.11.
