Firefighters were scrambled to Marden after reports of a plane crash.

Crews went to Pattenden Lane shortly after 7pm on Friday after they were told a light aircraft had come down in a field.

But after searching for nearly two hours, it was ruled out as a false alarm.

The team used thermal imaging cameras to check the undergrowth, but think the call instead related to smoke that was coming from a nearby bonfire.

The report is not believed to have been made maliciously.

Some of the firefighters had been taking part in a charity row-a-thon in aid of West Farleigh charity Dandelion Time when they were sent to the scrubland.

They returned to 7R Performance gym in Maidstone Road, Marden, two days later to help complete the challenge, which involved covering a distance of 5,600 miles on static rowing machines.

More than £15,000 is expected to have been raised during the two-week-long challenge.
