When a newspaper gave front page billing to top-level training being on offer from a prestigious rugby club, it was fitting coverage.

There was just one slight hitch - the paper was based in Cranbrook, east Devon, and the Harlequins Academy sessions were being held in the Weald town of Cranbrook.

The Midweek Herald has issued an apology for its front page story which gave a run-down of the specialised classes.

The event, taking place at the town’s rugby club in Angley Road, was due to go ahead last week.

Organisers said the sessions had been cancelled, as not enough places were filled.

The classes ran at the club last summer and take place across the south east throughout the year.

The list of those happening in October half term will be released soon.

The article published on the front of the August, 14, Cranbrook edition explained how the Gallagher Premiership League, club was holding community rugby camps across the south east, and was making a stop in the town on Thursday, August 29, and Friday, August 30.

Children at the camp would have been able to enjoy a mix of small-sided games and technical coaching, all with a game-based approach to make them feel part of a team.

What’s more, all attending children would have had the opportunity to come to a Harlequins men’s training session at The Twickenham Stoop Stadium, in Middlesex, during the 2019/20 season, and meet the first-team players.

An apology in the Midweek Herald’s Cranbrook edition read: “As many readers spotted, this story was published in error, as the Cranbrook the club was visiting was the Cranbrook in Kent.

“We apologise for the error, which falls well below the standards we expect of ourselves."
