Firefighters and police remain at the scene of a vehicle fire down a rural road which has seen the street closed for more than nine hours.

Villagers in Goudhurst are being told to keep their windows and doors shut due to smoke from a tractor which caught alight and spread to around 16 tonnes of baled straw earlier this morning.

Passers-by have seen a cordon near Lover's Lane, near the junction with North Road, which remains in place this evening.

In a statement this evening, Kent Fire and Rescue Service said it was making 'steady progress' in extinguishing the blaze.

A spokesman said: "Five fire engines have been sent to the scene and crews wearing breathing apparatus are using compressed air foam to tackle the blaze. Residents living nearby are advised to close all doors and windows, and we are advising all to avoid the area whilst crews deal with the fire."

Crews were called out just before 11.40am.
