Simon Cowell offers £10,000 reward in a bid to reunite Marden boy, 3, with his dog Morse for Christmas

A family say they are incredibly touched and shocked after X Factor mogul Simon Cowell offered a £10,000 reward for the return of their stolen pet dog in time for Christmas.

Nine-month-old border terrier, Morse, was snatched from outside a home on Pattenden Lane, Marden 10 days ago and Edward, who turned three today, sent a tear-jerking letter to Santa asking to have his dog back.

His dad, Richard Latter said the music giant contacted the family after being moved by what happened.

He initially wanted to make the donation anonymously but had been persuaded to reveal his identity to increase the profile of the appeal.

Mr Latter, 40 and of Pattenden Lane, told Kent Online: "It is incredibly kind of him and just absolutely superb. I just cannot get my head round it, I really can't.

"It is very generous of him to go public and put himself in the spotlight. Simon is a dog owner himself and he was just really touched."

Mr Latter said his son hadn't been very well in recent days but he hopes he will pick up on his parents' newfound optimism.

"We have a lot of hope all of this will bring Morse home," he added.

The appeal for Morse's return has secured the backing of Helen Grant, MP for Maidstone and the Weald. She has pledged to do everything she can to help get the family's pet back.

Morse had escaped from the family's garden before finding his way onto the road where he was picked up by a couple in a blue pick up truck who said they were going to return him to their owners.

Anyone with information about Morse's whereabouts can call police on 101.
