Woolton Farm, makers of Kentish Pip cider, launch Woolton Farm Wines near Canterbury
06:00, 20 September 2021
A cider-making firm has officially launched its first range of wines from a vineyard planted 10 years ago.
Woolton Farm at Bekesbourne near Canterbury, is already the home of Kentish Pip cider, but now the family-owned farm has launched Woolton Farm Wines.
Despite officially launching this month, the single vineyard, which was planted in 2011, has already won awards for its wine, including a gold medal at the International Wine Challenge and gold award from Wine GB.
A spokesman for the company said: "We are very proud to be part of a new era of English wine.
"Our wines are small batch and experimental; we are a nimble and small grower driven by a passion for incredible produce and great tasting wines.
"We are proud that, despite only releasing in 2021, our wines have already won awards."
The farm is owned by the Mount family who have been growing fruit there for more than a century.
After planting the vineyard, the family initially made just enough wine for their own uses, and then for family weddings.
But it has expanded to produce still and sparkling white and rose wines, including Bacchus, Pet Nat Chardonnay and Sparkling Bacchus Charmat.
The launch night included a tour of the vineyard and site, and a tasting in its 14th Century thatched barn, which is open throughout the week for guests to visit, and has a shop, deli, cafe and bar.
