An Officer and A Gentleman the Musical at The Marlowe Theatre review

Whether it’s stage to screen or screen to stage, converting a classic can often leave a slightly bitter taste.
If Richard Gere isn’t in An Officer and a Gentleman then is it worth seeing?
Throw in a few 80s classics and the answer is a resounding yes.
Opening night at the beautiful Marlowe Theatre and the stage was set ready for the dramatic performance.
A few early sound issues were quickly resolved and it was a high energy, funny opening as we were introduced to the new recruits.
The ladies looked set to steal the show as they performed It’s a Man’s World at the factory.
Seven powerful voices complimented each other beautifully while showing the anger of getting overlooked by their employers.
But Jonny Fines, playing the iconic Zack Mayo, came back with Blaze of Glory and continued to get better with each performance, finishing with his short but heartbreaking You’re The Voice.
Not to be out done, Emma Williams’ performing Alone at the highest point of the stage up the metal stairs, brought a tear to the coldest hearts. She was powerful and emotional.
Lynette and Sid, played by Ian McIntosh and Jessica Daley, may not have been the starring roles but they also delivered incredible performances.
The story is filled with drama. A story of war, love, heartbreak and crisp white suits.
Songs including Living on a Prayer and The Final Countdown got everyone’s dancing in their seats and standing for the ovation at the end.
If you miss the chance to see this before September then look out for work be leads Jonny Fines and Emma Williams in the future. They are not to be missed.
