Comedians Adam Kay and Andi Osho will be sharing their stories at a seaside literary festival.
Margate Bookie is set to return for its eighth year, with a host of authors and guest speakers coming to some of the coastal town’s most iconic landmarks.
This year, festival organisers have partnered with vintage fairground Dreamland for the first time to host some of its events, alongside long-standing venue partners Turner Contemporary and the Margate School.
There will be author talks, book signings, writing workshops, poetry slams and children’s events across the three days.
The festival, which takes place during the half term, is packed with activities for young readers, with writers and illustrators such as Roopa Farooki (Double Detectives), Garry Parsons (The Dinosaur that Pooped a Planet) and John Condon (The Pirates are Coming) set to appear.
There will also be family-friendly comedy from Adam Kay, best known for This is Going to Hurt, and Henry Parker, as well as an entertaining live show, Stolen History, by Sathnam Sanghera.
There will also be lots of fascinating chats with authors across all genres, from non-fiction to romance and thrillers, taking place over the weekend.
Award-winning journalist Daisy Buchanan will interview stand-up comic Andi Osho in a live recording of the You’re Booked podcast, while former Lush frontwoman and music writer Miki Berenyi will be talking all things Britpop and performing with the Miki Berenyi Trio.
Italian singer-songwriter and novelist Erica Mou and art critic Chloe Ashby will be discussing women in music, journalist Yomi Adegoke and The Split author Laura Kay will talk about modern rom-coms and there will be podcast recordings with special guests including Lucy Vine, Rosie Wilby and Miriam Robinson.
Margate Bookie director and founder Andreas Loizou said: “I'm overjoyed that Bookie has put Margate on the UK's literary map.
“Over the last few years we’ve had big name authors alongside local writers, seen literary legends side by side with up-and-coming stars, and brought people together to celebrate words and books in the seaside town we love.
“With new partnerships and an expanded programme, Bookie 2023 really will be bigger and better than ever.”
Local booksellers including Moon Lane Books, Books Bodega, Seadog Books and Books That Expand the Mind will be supporting the festival.
Margate Bookie will take place from Friday, October 20 to Sunday, October 22.
You can find the full festival line-up here.
Some events are free, however others are ticketed and must be booked online in advance.
