You might not think there’s room for another folk festival on the Kent calendar, but Canterbury is hoping to prove you wrong.

Bells will be jingling and bands will be singing at the county’s newest music festival this weekend.

With established annual folk events in Broadstairs, Tenterden and Rochester, it may not be easy for Canterbury to make its mark – but with a stellar line-up over two days it’s certainly off to a flying start.

The festival, headlined by Gentlemen of Few, will see morris dancers, food and drink stalls, arts and crafts and face painting.

The young Deal band, made up of Elliott Norris, Reece Forward, Jarrod Piner and Kit Evans, have performed live gigs for around five years.

“What is nice about being asked to a new place, is it’s less of a feel of worry or nervousness,” says pianist Jarrod.

“Canterbury is home ground for us. It’s a good feeling that people still want to hear our music and we are very happy to be a part of this festival. We want people to have a good dance and get a bit sweaty.”

The bluegrass folk-rock band’s key instruments are the guitar, banjo, piano and bass but they have been known to throw in a trombone or harmonica making them sound just that little bit different.

Other performers at the festival include AB and the Underclass, Thomas Ashby, Relig Oran and Green Diesel.

Petko Kolev, organiser of the festival, said: “We wanted to put on some different entertainment in the city and folk is a nice theme for a festival.”

Head along to the Dane John Gardens on Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28, from 10am till 7pm on Saturday and 10am till 6pm on Sunday.
