If helping with homework leaves you scratching your head, you’re not alone.
Even allowing for juggling working from home with helping kids with their schoolwork, many parents have discovered some of their knowledge from school was hazy to say the least.
In response, Kent Adult Education has launched a range of free online family courses for parents, carers and their children.
KAE Family Courses are aimed at being informative, practical and fun, and offer parents, carers and their children an opportunity to enjoy quality time together learning new skills... or maybe rediscovering old ones.
The online courses are completely free and are virtual, in real time, to enable live interaction with the tutor and fellow learners.
The fun courses are for parents and children to learn together in an informal and family friendly setting.
Courses include: First Aid for Families, Mini Builders and Boffins, Rocket Making, Parenting.
And anyone can have a go, from parents to grandparents and carers of children. Some courses help parents tackle everyday family issues and also help everyone enjoy family life.
Some of the courses include:
Confident Parent, Confident Child, Managing Children’s Behaviour, Parents Towards Employment’ Stepping Up into Primary with Crafts’ Understanding your Teenager’ Family English, Maths and Language.
Some are also designed to help parents and carers support their child at school and with homework, focusing on English, Maths and Language, while some could also enable adults to recognise and develop their skills for employment, volunteering and for further learning.
Those courses include:
Keeping up with the Children, Maths and English, Chatter Matters, Family Language ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages), Cooking on a Budget and Family Story Writing. People who have already had a go at some of the courses have been pleased with the results.
Vicky Seagars, who started a family learning course, said: “I wanted to show my children that it’s never too late to go back to learning, and every step counts.”
Kent Adult Education also runs dozens of courses for adults, covering subjects from the arts to languages and textiles to maths and business. Currently the majority of classes are online, with contact with a tutor and your fellow students, though KAE is beginning a phased reopening of centres in seven towns across the county from Monday, September 14.
You could try a new hobby, such as learn the guitar online, or try belly dancing or sign language, or boost your skills with an introduction to bookkeeping, or something many parents may like to consider - Understanding Your Teenager.
