Turner Contemporary in Margate will stage a major exhibition to JMW Turner during its fifth anniversary in 2016

14:00, 23 October 2015

To mark its fifth anniversary, Margate's Turner Contemporary will stage a major exhibition of the work of the celebrated landscape artist it was named after.

Turner and Colour will feature more than 70 works including paintings, drawings and engravings.

It will be the fullest survey of the artist's watercolours of Margate yet to be shown there and explore his use of colour.

JMW Turner spent much time in Margate in his later life, and made many studies looking out from his landlady Mrs Booth's house seafront house across the harbour.

Curator and leading Turner expert Ian Warrell said: "Colour is the essence of Turner's work, and his distinctive, sometimes eccentric use of vibrant colour was absolutely central to his achievement as an artist.

"In placing colour at the heart of the project, the familiar outline of Turner's life and art is explored in a new way."

Beginning with the more traditional ‘Old Master’ aesthetic that Turner quickly matched and then superseded, the exhibition charts the impact made by his experimental techniques and his eagerness to experiment and engage with developments in colour theory and new materials.

It is the second time the gallery has staged an exhibition of the artist's work, after it held Turner and the Elements in 2012.

Turner and Colour will run from Saturday, October 8, 2016 to Sunday, January 8, 2017.

Other exhibitions announced for the venue's anniversary year include Seeing Round Corners from May 21 to September 25, 2016, which explores artists' response to the circle, an exhibition of watercolours Leise Wilson: 365 Days, from February 4 to March 10 and Danish artist Joachim Koester: The Other Side of the Sky from February 4 to May 8.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday in the spring and summer between 10am and 6pm and between 10am and 5pm autumn and winter and is free to enter.
