Comedian Julian Clary is set to star in an award-winning musical during its stint in a Kent theatre.
The revival of Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to the Churchill Theatre in Bromley, starring the former Aldington resident as Herod for three nights.
The new adaptation, which was first staged as an open-air production in Regent’s Park, won an Olivier Award in 2017 for Best Musical Revival.
It stars a cast of West End performers including Ian McIntosh (We Will Rock You) and Shem Omari James (Dreamgirls), alongside stand-up Julian Clary.
The comic first made a name for himself on the alternative comedy circuit in the 1980s before hosting the Channel 4 game show Sticky Moments with Julian Clary in 1989.
His TV career has included shows such as Prickly Heat, the All Star Talent Show, Celebrity Big Brother and Taskmaster.
He is also a regular cast member of the London Palladium panto, having appeared in the annual Christmas show for eight years.
The comedian will take on the role of Herod for select dates during the current tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s acclaimed musical.
The production was written by the award-winning composer and Tim Rice in the 1960s, but was rejected by multiple theatres and production companies.
As a result, the pair decided to instead turn the show into a rock and roll concept album, which was released in 1970 to critical acclaim.
The musical then made its Broadway debut in 1971 and opened at the Palace Theatre in London the following year.
Its score features numbers such as I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane, Superstar and Everything’s Alright.
The show is currently touring the UK and will be at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley from Monday, February 26 to Saturday, March 2.
Julian Clary will star as Herod for three nights, from Thursday to Saturday, only.
The tour will also be at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury from Monday, June 17 to Saturday, June 22.
