Kent is Europe's top family holiday destination

00:01, 17 June 2015

Kent has been named Europe's top family holiday spot, beating some of the most famous destinations on the continent.

The county was picked as part of Lonely Planet's Best in Europe 2015 guide, ahead of classic family destinations such as Normandy, Wales and Ireland.

The authors highlighted Kent as being "full of opportunities for time travel to intrigue curious young minds", including "the chance to indulge in retro-fun on sandy Broadstairs Beach."

The guide also singles out the soon-to-be-reopened Dreamland amusement park in Margate, and the "mind blowing" views from the White Cliffs.

Visit Kent said the recognition from the guide's authors was a "fanstastic accolade" for the county.

Sandra Matthews-Marsh, chief exec of Visit Kent, said there are plenty of reasons why the garden of England had been singled out as a top destination.

She said: "It's that whole mix of hands on history, wonderful cultural events and attractions, vibrant, diverse towns and villages, wonderful countryside of course, but also great people."

"We're absolutely thrilled and delighted to have Lonely Planet identify Kent as a top family destination in Europe.

"It's a fantastic accolade and a great indication of how things are changing in Kent.

"Dreamland opening this week, the Turner Contemporary's ongoing success and beaches - particularly in Thanet - famous for their high level of cleanliness."

The destinations on the list have been chosen by Lonely Planet's team of European researchers.

There's definitely no shortage of things to see and do in the county, but what are the favourites?
