It’s that time of year: salads and smoothies are out, soups and Sunday roasts are in.

Nothing quite hits the spot on a chilly autumnal day than a hearty roast dinner and, according to TripAdvisor, these cosy Kent pubs serve up the best Sunday lunches around…

THE BUCKS HEAD: This family-run pub, owned by a husband and wife team, has received rave reviews for its delicious food, friendly staff and traditional country atmosphere. Visitors can cosy up by the fireplace and enjoy winter warmers like baked camembert, butternut squash soup and, of course, a Sunday roast. It’s also a stone’s throw from Knole Park so there’s plenty of pretty places where you can walk off your lunch.

THE CORNER HOUSE: This contemporary bar and restaurant has achieved a perfect score among reviewers, many of whom were won over by the fresh, seasonal food and charming interior, which retains lots of 16th century character while showing off its stylish refurb. While the menu changes regularly to make the most of local produce, diners can always rely on the Sunday lunch, with dishes such as confit pork belly, beef wellington and lamb shoulder.

THE DOVE: When Secret Drinker visited The Dove in 2022, he said the goat cheese and beetroot dish he sampled was “the best starter I’ve ever had in a pub”. It’s no surprise, in that case, that this Shepherd Neame boozer is rated so highly when it comes to a decent roast dinner. It’s traditional, well-presented and serves up classics like turkey breast, honey and mustard gammon and sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

THE PLOUGH INN: With hundreds of happy customers gushing about the roast beef and log fire, this village pub is a great spot to stop off on your weekend stroll in the countryside. The menu is curated by head chef Richard, who specialises in combining traditional English cuisine with bold, new flavours. There are seasonal dishes on rotation, but the team at The Plough recommend the beef rump, roast chicken and apple crumble as particular favourites on the sample menu.

THE RINGLESTONE INN: Another hit with our Secret Drinker, this place got the thumbs up for its excellent choice of drinks and several stunning fireplaces. The Grade II-listed building dates back to the 1500s and it still looks wonderfully historic, but the menu has been brought up to date with tasty, locally-sourced dishes. The roast dinner is a huge hit with locals and has a waiting list of at least four or five weeks, so you’ll have to book early if you want to nab a table.
