Maidstone: World Custard Pie Championships 50th anniversary in Coxheath

00:01, 31 May 2017

It will be half a century this weekend since the first custard pie was thrown in the World Custard Pie Championships in Maidstone.

It was during the Swinging Sixties when the secret recipe was concocted, with the help of local children’s entertainer, Mr Pastry, and the eccentric local fundraising event was born.

Over the past five decades, the formula, outlandish costumes, and judging has not deviated from the original – though its fame has spread.

TV crews have descended over the years, and teams from around the world have taken part. But at its heart is still a fundraising day of fun for local folk, with founder Mike FitzGerald at the helm.

This year organisers called on previous teams and entrants to join in with the anniversary celebrations and 34 teams have signed up – a third who have taken part before.

Teams had to be turned away, so that the event did not get too big, though all are encouraged to come and watch – and have a giggle.

Mike said: “It’s been a long time and we’ve had some great fun over the years.”

DETAILS

Entry for this year’s championships has now closed but anyone can go along to watch proceedings and join in the family fun day being held in Coxheath, Maidstone, on Saturday, June 3, from noon.

This year’s event is raising funds for Children in Need.

Around £250 has already been raised as part of an exhibition of vintage photos, memorabilia and press coverage at The Mall, Maidstone, last weekend.

Some 2,000 pies will be thrown this weekend, while younger throwers will be able to take part in the Battle of the Sponges, at 1pm.

A parade of teams will take place at 2.30pm, with battle commencing at 2.45pm.
