Pay your respects to members of the Armed Forces with Kent’s Remembrance Day events.
Several towns across the county are hosting church services, street parades and memorials where you can pay tribute to those who have put their lives on the line throughout history.
Battle of Britain Memorial, near Folkestone
There will be a short service of commemoration at this impressive war memorial, which is free to enter. After the service, visitors can explore the museum’s displays, exhibitions and artefacts dedicated to those on the front line. There’s the Harry Gray statue, the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall, The Wing’s immersive Scramble Experience and replica Spitfire aircraft.
Details: Saturday, November 11 at the Battle of Britain Memorial in Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkestone, from 11am.
The Broadway, Maidstone
A parade featuring military personnel from in and around Maidstone will take place from Week Street and the High Street and continue towards the War Memorial at The Broadway. This is where the wreath will be laid and, after that, there will be a Service of Remembrance in Jubilee Square. The parade will then make its way back towards Week Street after a salute from the Mayor of Maidstone and the Commanding Officer.
Details: Sunday, November 12 at Week Street, The Broadway and Jubilee Square in Maidstone from 10:30am.
Canterbury Cathedral
Canterbury’s Remembrance Day wreath will be laid in Buttermarket, just outside the entrance to the historic cathedral, where crowds are expected to gather in the morning. There will then be a commemorative service inside the cathedral, including Sung Eucharist with choral music and hymns.
Details: Sunday, November 12 at Canterbury Cathedral from 10:10am.
Dover Castle
This year, a fascinating exhibition is open at Dover Castle for Remembrance Day. The exhibition by local artist John Toomey, entitled the Cost of War, includes sculptures and artwork that aim to provoke thought and reflection on the human cost of conflict. There will also be a Remembrance Service in the morning, all of which is included in the price of a ticket to Dover Castle or your English Heritage membership.
Details: Sunday, November 12 at St Mary-in-Castro inside Dover Castle from 10am.
Historic Dockyard Chatham
The dockyard's annual service Armistice Day Commemoration Service returns this year. The service, which takes place at one of Kent's most notable wartime locations, will begin at the site's National Destroyer Memorial, beside the HMS Cavalier, and invites visitors to lay their own tributes if they wish. Members from the HMS Cavalier Association and the former Bishop to the Armed Forces will be part of the service, after which crowds can explore the maritime attraction. Please note, the service is free to attend but you will need a valid ticket to enter the dockyard's exhibitions and galleries.
Details: Saturday, November 11 at the Historic Dockyard Chatham from 10:45am.
St Mary’s Church, Swanley
The annual parade in Swanley takes place in the town centre and ends at the War Memorial in the grounds of St Mary’s Church. Local groups including the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets and Brownies will take part in the parade, which in the past has been led by the Mayor of Swanley who lays the wreath at the memorial.
Details: Saturday, November 11 at Swanley town centre from 2:30pm.
Stone Street, Faversham
Each year, the Remembrance Day parade includes youth groups from across the town, and this November looks to be no different. The parade will take place along the High Street and finish at Faversham’s War Memorial Garden in Stone Street. There will be two minutes of silence, after which visitors are welcomed into St Mary of Charity Church for a full service.
Details: Sunday, November 12 at Stone Street and St Mary of Charity Church in Faversham from 10:45am.
Vine War Memorial, Sevenoaks
The memorial begins with a parade from the Vine Pavilion to the Vine War Memorial, which arrives at 10:50am in time for the service. The service will be led by Revd Canon Angus MacLeay of St Nicholas Church. There will then be a live performance from the Eynsford Concert Band.
