I was 11 when I first stumbled across Peter Pan Goes Wrong while browsing YouTube.

I loved it so much that I rewatched it a number of times over the years until one day I discovered the video had disappeared (I’m guessing the copyright police found out!).

So I was especially excited to learn the play was coming to the Marlowe in Canterbury, and to see if it was just as good in the flesh.

And five years on from first watching it, I certainly wasn’t left disappointed!

If you’re expecting the Disney story about the boy who never grows up, you’re in for a shock.

Because this is a play with a twist, and it’s hilarious - like, really, really funny.

It follows the members of a theatre group putting on a production of Peter Pan, and everything that can go wrong does.

No spoilers, but the set falls apart, props malfunction, and the actors forget their lines, but it all adds to the hilarity of the show.

Sometimes you can’t be sure what’s scripted and what’s not, but it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

It’s hard to pick a star of the show, but for me Jack Michael Stacey was brilliant playing Chris, playing Captain Hook and George Darling (keep up!).

Ciara Morris, as Sandra, playing Wendy was also great and certainly put the dramatic in amateur dramatics, and Jamie Birkett, as Annie, as Tinkerbell, added some spark (sorry, tiny spoiler).

Overall it was better than I could have imagined, and it was clear from how much everyone in the audience was laughing that I was in good company.

It was two hours of mayhem from the brilliant Mischief Theatre, with great set designs, eye-catching costumes and hilarious performers.

I’d definitely recommend seeing it in Canterbury while you still can.

Peter Pan is at the Marlowe until Sunday, February 4, with performances at 7.30pm, and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2.30pm.

Tickets cost between £16 and £55. To book visit marlowetheatre.com.
