Peter Andre's Big Night Tour 2014 launches with concert at Folkestone's Leas Cliff Hall on Friday, September 26

Peter Andre seems to have more showbiz lives than a cat, and only gets more gorgeous with age.
Step one was achieving chart success in the 1990s with Mysterious Girl, long before reality TV show I’m A Celebrity...and his subsequent marriage to Katie Price fuelled a new wave of success in the noughties.
His dignified and devoted parenting to their two children during the fall-out with Katie won a legion of new fans, eager for his every new release from music to perfume to the My Life TV show.
Aged 41 and with a new baby daughter and fiancée in tow, Peter’s now winning over the DIY fanbase with Peter Andre’s 60 Minute Makeover.
This week he’s back on the road with a fresh tour, Big Night, and a new look. Pete told us about the style overhaul, performing with his pals, and why he’s having to compete with son Junior for the on-stage spotlight.
What can your Kent fans expect on the Big Night?
“We’re using a 10-piece band so straight away the songs will sound completely different. We’ll do the songs they know of mine, but we’ll also throw in some classics of other people’s. If I do Big Night, which is one of my swing tracks, I’ll then throw in a swing track that everyone knows and if I’m going to sing my song New Orleans, then I’ll throw in a blues track that everyone knows. We don’t disappoint on our shows. Mysterious Girl always goes down a treat and better when you’ve got a massive band behind you.”
Is the new direction with swing and blues a more mature Peter that we’re seeing?
“It’s sort of meant to look like you’re in a New Orleans jazz bar, that’s how the scene is. I love jazz, blues, swing, rock ‘n’ roll, and if it works for me to incorporate it then I will definitely do more of this in the future. I want this to be a much more slick, suit-and-tie type of show, so there might be the odd change of suits but it’s less of the gimmicky outfits.”
From TV we know that you’re a very chatty and open character, but does this come across in concert?
“Absolutely, it’s all about audience interaction and having fun with the crowd, getting them involved. The audience that come along are all different ages, from two to 92, it’s unbelievable. It’s not just my music that brings them, it’s a mix – people come who brought your perfume or calendars, you get really young kids coming who know my song Kid [the theme song for the 2014 animated movie Mr Peabody and Sherman, which Peter sung] but don’t even know Mysterious Girl. It really is a family show for all generations, definitely bring the kids along.”
Will you be bringing your own family with you?
“Hopefully, depending on how it is with school then yes. They love coming on tour, in fact Junior asked me if he can come on stage and I say, ‘Sometimes, I don’t mind.’ Although he’s very quickly taking over! I’ve got great management that allow me to work a lot harder when the kids aren’t with me. I get them half the time – that’s Junior and Princess; Amelia I’ve got with me all the time. Sometimes it will get to the point that Junior will say to me, ‘Dad, do you work?’ because I’ve crammed in as much work as I can before they get to me so I won’t work on the days that they’re home.”
How ingrained is performing in your family?
“My grandfather was Greek but he was the equivalent to a gospel singer. They used to take him places to sing in the churches because they said he had an angelic voice. My brother Chris plays eleven different instruments, he’ll be the guitarist on the tour, so it’s in our blood.”
What’s the first love here – music, business or TV presenting?
“I started music when I was 16, I’d signed my deal at 16, but at school I’d studied drama and that was really my biggest subject at school, so it was overall performing really. On Peter Andre’s 60 Minute Makeover I get to be my clumsy self, and I can really see people’s joy when their house is transformed: it’s the most incredible feeling. But music is my first love, being on stage – 100 per cent.”
