Review: The Rocky Horror Show comes to the Orchard Theatre in Dartford

12:40, 08 June 2016

It's not often you go to see a stage production and members of the audience get away with shouting expletives.

Usually that's the sort of thing that gets you thrown out - but there was no danger of that at Dartford's Orchard Theatre.

Welcome to the weird and wacky world of The Rocky Horror Show, where such interventions are the norm, encouraged even.

The interaction with the audience has evolved to become an integral part of the performance, as much as dressing up as your favourite character or leaping out of your seat to do The Time Warp.

It was handled brilliantly by narrator, Norman Pace, one half of comedy duo Hale and Pace.

He couldn't be thrown off his stride, even when his purposeful pauses were filled with suggestions that turned the air blue, resulting in howls of laughter from all present.

To be honest, there was plenty of blue, but then Rocky Horror is a bit naughty, some might even call it rude.

But this is a fun sci-fi frolic with no room for prudes.

The cast, who looked as though they were enjoying themselves as much as the audience, launched themselves into every scene and were full of energy.

Richard Meek and Lauren Ingram, as Brad and Janet, made an excellent hapless couple; Kristian Lavercombe, a Rocky Horror veteran of nearly 1,000 shows, was brilliant as Riff Raff;
and Dominic Anderson was a suitably chisled Rocky.

Tim Curry's version of Frank-N-Furter is always going to be a tough act to follow, but Liam Tamne, who some will remember from BBC talent show The Voice, was as manly as he was camp and, unsurprisingly I guess, produced some great vocals.

It was easy to forget all this was happening on a Monday night. The rest of the week promises to be a riot!

The Rocky Horror Show is at The Orchard Theatre, Dartford until Saturday, June 11. For tickets, call 01322 220000 or visit https://orchardtheatre.co.uk/Online/
