Review: The Hop Farm's Freak Week SINdulgence is a spine tingling thrill-ride you won't soon forget

Running through an empty theme park pursued by sinister, mask wearing goons might not be everyone’s idea of a perfect evening activity but there’s a lot to love about the latest incarnation of Freak Week which returns to the Hop Farm this Halloween.
This year the devious minds that brought us last year's horrible, monster-filled mazes have opted for something a little different. Freak Week: SINdulgence steers clear of fantasy horror and instead the imagines the consequences of all crime being legal for one hour.
If the idea sounds familiar, that’s because SINduglence draws more than a little inspiration from 2013 American horror movie The Purge. But once the action starts this is quickly forgotten as you run (and in some cases crawl) for your life through the five areas of this sprawling horror romp.
Despite my friend being stranded on a lonely stretch of motorway for over an hour, we still managed to have first crack at the show. After a lengthy video which sets the scene our group were whisked off by SAS soldiers the a series of fright houses.
As a seasoned horror movie fan I have never been impressed by the idea of actors jumping out from behind doors but the Freak Week crew knew what they were doing. When something grabbed my shoulder for the third time in a dimly-lit maze my cautious walk just might have become a frightened scramble.
But my favourite part of the entire experience was moving between areas herded by our military escort. With darkened play equipment and uninflated bouncy castles the Hop Farm, is weird enough when the lights go out. Add fog, fireworks and actors in some impressive costumes and you have the perfect setting for a Halloween horror experience.
And the cast really do deserve a special mention. Masked figures follow you throughout the night and there's a brilliant twist involving a hackney carriage I won't spoil.
To top it all SINdulgence finished with a laser gun battle between our group and Freak Week's villains. It was silly, childish and a lot of fun.
So, if you fancy a thrilling horror experience that will have you looking over your shoulder, spirit yourself down to the Hop Farm this Halloween...
