Two centuries ago, a newly-crowned King George IV enjoyed Ramsgate’s hospitality so much he bestowed royal status on its harbour.
And the unique accolade’s 200th anniversary will be marked this weekend.
Early Ramsgate was a highly fashionable resort with assembly rooms for the well-to-do, salt-water baths and a bustling port.
Today, it's considered ‘Britain’s sunshine capital’ based on Met Office data, and is a favourite of Londoners looking to relocate.
Actress Brenda Blethyn, star of the detective series Vera, was born in the town. She said: "My head and heart are in Ramsgate, and I absolutely love it here. We've got a beautiful harbour, and we're about to celebrate its 200th anniversary."
There is also a fundraising campaign to get a 15ft sculpture of George IV bronzed for the town, created by former pop star turned sculptor Dominic Grant, who died last year.
