Last year, due to government restrictions, organisers of the popular Halloween Horrors at Fort Amherst in Chatham were forced to cancel the event for the first time in 37 years.

It is back this year, so we went along to find out if it is back at its scary best. Here's our review...

I thought the teenagers in the queue at Halloween Horrors at Fort Amherst in Chatham, would have been even more excited to get into the gruesome site than me...

So my first surprise of the night was meeting several who seemed to turn their night out into a horror story all by themselves.

The first ones had not paid for their wristbands so they were asked to leave, and the next ones we spied were having a row about who they wanted to walk through the scary fort with.

One girl had a meltdown after realising her friend had invited others she didn't know, so all hell broke loose between them before they even walked in the tunnels of hell.

Even encouragement from our event guide didn't stop their squabble, so my friend and I were happy to swap places in the queue with them as they continued.

I'd taken my friend along and neither of us had been to one of these fright night attractions for years, so we were both a little apprehensive about what it would involve.

Wear sensible shoes its website said, some parts you may have to crawl through, it said, (would I fit was my main concern), but I shouldn't have worried as it was one of the best things I've done in a quite a while.

From the haunted guides who stay with you throughout the experience, to the many zombie type actors who greet and frighten you inside, it's just a scream. Literally.

It's not for the faint-hearted - it's a full-on, non-stop labyrinth of screams and fun.

There seem to be endless rooms and scary tunnels which we were led into, and from the moment the haunted chaos started I couldn't stop laughing. I was grinning from ear-to-ear each time I was spooked (is that the reaction most people have?)

Hands and faces and even feathers and more come at you from all angles; each room has a different theme, and the touching and scariness gets more full-on as the 20 odd people in your party delve deeper and deeper into the fort.

At one point you have to enter the black sack experience. It was one of the best bits in there - you are ordered by a very strict soldier to go into the black tunnel five-at-a-time, but you have no idea where you are heading or what you are heading into.

You have to climb through it like you are inside a giant black sack, but it is such a fun part of the experience.

Zombies and ghouls are everywhere and catch you unaware at every turn especially during the strobe light sections. Watch out for the the dead raver girl, she haunted the pair of us - a lot.

And chainsaw man, now, he is scary and loud and fun - he chases you around the site quite a bit.

Even the loony-bin room was authentic and one detainee even asked me how many people I'd killed today...She was horrified when I admitted it was none!

Crawling through their bunk-beds to get away from them gave me goosebumps.

The near-hour long experience goes so quickly, but it's done so well and the fort really is the perfect place to do it.

Everyone at the site have created some wonderful costumes, zombies and props and rehearsed their parts perfectly. After last year's cancellation it's back with a bang!

And there is a little bar and barbecue (with very reasonable prices) at the end and chainsaw man doesn't forget you there either...

Adult tours are suitable for people aged 16 and over and run from from Thursday, October 28 to Sunday, October 31.

They run every 10 minutes and last up to an hour, but there are also tours for teenagers from 12 to 17 years and children's ones for four to 12 years, on the same dates.
