Those on the inner circle of the live music scene know that a family-friendly gig over brunch is this Mother’s Day’s best kept secret.

Music-lover and mum of two, Kay Ruby, started her Secret Sunday Brunch gigs to enable families with young children and others who can’t easily get out to city-centre, night-time concerts to enjoy live bands in more low-key, laidback surroundings.

Throw in a delicious brunch meal at one of several popular venues the event has moved between during it’s three-year history – and Kay was onto a winner.

But this Mother’s Day, the Secret Sunday Brunch will be at its latest home – Cafe 1809 in Hildenborough, near Tonbridge, which is the business of Olympic hero Dame Kelly Holmes.

Music will come courtesy of four female artists from Folkstock Records: Zoe Wren will perform at 11am, Daria Kulesh at noon, Minnie Birch at 1pm and Kaity Rae at 2pm.

Kay said: “I realise that it’s really hard to go to evening gigs and arrange babysitters and the like, and that was one of the main reasons why I started doing live music events during the daytime - I wanted everyone to have access.

“Mostly gigs are in pubs with age restrictions, but live music is such an experience for young children and they’re fascinated by it. Experiencing it for themselves is lovely. You can do that at festivals of course, but I wanted to make it a place where people could drop in at the last minute.

She added: “It’s free entry so you don’t have to have a ticket, you don’t have to plan ahead, it’s just something for everyone to enjoy.”

Secret Sunday Brunch’s Mother’s Day event runs from 11am until 3pm at Cafe 1809 in Hildenborough, near Tonbridge.
