Review of the Rocky Horror Show back on tour at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury

The number of sparkly hats, suspenders and fishnets worn by people in the cobbled streets of Canterbury could only mean one thing - Rocky Horror Show had come to town.
The cult classic attracts a core devout fan base and there were plenty who made the trip to the Marlowe Theatre on opening night last night.
My relationship with the show is a little less committed - I remember the film vaguely and had heard about the enthusiastic audiences but this was my first outing.
And while I heard rumblings from the crowd - in between the naughty heckling - that suggested it wasn't quite up to scratch, my naive eyes thought it was spectacular.
Haley Flaherty has a stunning voice and used her doe-eyes to fit the innocent role of Janet.
The supporting characters of Riff Raff, Columbia and Magenta were as talented as the leads and brought the comedic roles to life on stage.
Ore Odbua continued his career change from sports reporter to musical theatre star via Strictly Come Dancing and he's here to stay.
If you didn't know his career path you wouldn't have guessed it, his singing was strong and comedy timing was as good as the rest of them.
As one gentleman pointed out to his wife on the way out, when the film came out in the 1970s it would have been shocking and criticised by many.
But with 13 seasons of Ru Paul's Drag race to enjoy on Netflix, a man in make-up and walking in heels better than most women (well, me at least) could have less of an impact.
However, the dramatic entrance, commanding presence on stage and all round great performance from Stephen Webb still gave that wow factor.
Complete with filthy innuendos - from both stage and stalls - and a personalised and witty narration, it's a must watch for everyone.
