The best-selling novelist first moved to the city at the age of 19 and eventually landed a job with the New York Observer.

Her dating column for the paper, entitled Sex and the City, ran from 1994 to 1996. The column, which would feature personal stories from the romantic lives of Candace and her friends, inspired the TV show of the same name.

Sex and the City was first broadcast on HBO in 1998 and starred Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, a single newspaper columnist in her 30s who is looking for love, based on Candace and her writing.

The series ran for six years, receiving more than 50 Emmy nominations during its time on screen and spawning two feature films.

The main cast, including Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, also reunited in 2021 for the sequel series And Just Like That.

The only member of the show’s original foursome not to appear in the sequel was Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones.

After seeing huge success from the show and its spin-offs, creator Candace Bushnell is now heading out on the first UK tour of her one-woman show, True Tales of Sex, Success and Sex and the City.

The memoir-style show takes fans on a humorous journey from the writer’s arrival in New York to highlights of her career, including features in Time Magazine and an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The writer will be at Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre on Friday, February 16. You can book tickets online here or by calling 01227 787787.

Fans can also upgrade their tickets for the chance to meet Candace before the show.
