Maidstone-based Changeling Theatre will mark its 20th anniversary with its summer tour across Kent

00:01, 02 December 2016

Think deck chairs on the beach and picnics on the lawn: organisers of the annual Changeling Theatre summer tour have announced some of their plans for 2017.

There may be a chill in the air, but the Maidstone-based group is looking ahead to next summer which will be a landmark year, as it marks its 20th anniversary.

The 2016 summer tour, featuring two plays - All's Well That Ends Wells and She Stoops to Conquer - marked Shakespeare's 400th anniversary and visited venues including Margate Beach, Rochester Castle and Allington Castle.

In 2017, the tour will feature Hamlet and visit many of its popular venues - and some new ones.

Organisers will be calling on former members through the last two decades to join them on tour, and are set to announce tour dates and venues in February.

Director Rob Forknall said: "Many Changeling members have gone on to great things - and we hope some of them will come back to celebrate with us."

Hamlet has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent times, with performances by the RSC and National Theatre, and organisers also believe its themes have a relevance post Brexit and the US election, with mistrust and disengagement in the younger generation.

They said of the play: "Never out of season or fashion, Hamlet is a story of human mortality and struggle. A brilliant, relevant play for modern times."

Casting is yet to be made and will happen in the New Year.
