Author, art historian and TV presenter Dan Cruickshank will explore what we find irresistible about ornate, old buildings in a talk this weekend. He will examine the reason for their disappearance and the efforts being made to restore them.
Architectural wonders in Warsaw, Dresden, St Petersburg and Berlin all feature in the talk – the Recreation of Lost Buildings.
Closer to home, Dan looks at Euston Arch, the first great monument of the railway age and one of the finest pieces of Greek revival architecture ever built. Completed in 1837, it was demolished in 1961.
After years of searching, many of the original stones have been recovered from a London river bed in East London and the arch is being rebuilt.
Dan Cruickshank is an expert in his field and a fascinating speaker.
His talk at the Folkestone Quarterhouse on Friday, April 17 at 7pm. Tickets cost £14, £12 concessions. Visit www.quarterhouse.co.uk or call 01303 760750.
