World Gin Day is a global celebration of all things gin, held on the second Saturday in June - and this year is on Saturday, June 12.
The idea is simple: get people together all around the world and raise a glass to the brilliant spirit that is gin, and given the year we’ve had, we couldn’t agree more. We take a look at the best Kent gins and where to find them...
Maidstone Distillery
You’ll be welcomed with an award-winning signature George Bishop G&T at the bar from the firm in Market Buildings which is proud to continue the distilling tradition in the County Town. A distillery tour costs £18 when you can learn about the process of creating hand crafted spirits. Book, or get a voucher as a gift, at themaidstonedistillery.com
Anno Distillery
The Marden-based distillery is home to the world’s strongest gin - but don’t take our word for it, test it out yourself! A distillery tour and tasting costs £25 per person. Book at annodistillers.co.uk
Copper Rivet
The award-winning gin producers based at Chatham Maritime, do also produce whisky and vodka, but let’s not distract you this World Gin Day. The distillery made Leeds Castle’s limited edition 900th anniversary gin too, and now has a recently opened restaurant. The popular tours are taking bookings now at copperrivetdistillery.com
Kent Gin Company
Describing themselves as a ‘bunch of gin lovers’, the team behind this Maidstone-based enterprise brought together their love of gin and socialising during the lockdown and went on to create live virtual gin tastings and now gin garden parties, using only Kent-made gins. Garden parties cost £20 per person, with a minimum of 10 people. Book online at kentginco.co.uk
Chapel Down
Tenterden-based Chapel Down released what it believed was the first ever gin made from pinot noir grapes back in 2019. The Chapel Down Pinot Noir Gin was the third product to come from its range of premium spirits and is produced with distilled pinot noir grape skins from the Chapel Down harvest, blended with English wheat spirit. You can book tours at the vineyard now and visit the shop. For £40 you can also join a cocktail masterclass. Book at chapeldown.com
Canterbury Gin
Merging hops with seven botanicals such as Kentish apple, orris root, coriander seed and peels, it’s a premium artisan gin bursting with flavour. Find out more at the Foundry Brew Pub in Stour Street. You can order to collect or for £75 you get lifetime membership of Canterbury Brewers & Distillers Spirit Club which gives you first pick of future limited edition barrel aged spirit products. Greensand Distillery
The Shipbourne-based business, which became the first carbon neutral establishment of its kind in 2019, has an intimate Gin Experience where you’ll enjoy a cocktail while you tour the distillery; learn about the art of distilling and the different gin botanicals and how they are combined, and then you’ll distil your own full bottle of gin. A shared experience costs £25. Book at greensanddistillery.com
