Kent is set for another day of sunny weather- but forecasters have warned thunderstorms may follow this afternoon.

Thousands of people flocked to Kent's beaches yesterday despite concerns over social distancing, and more of the same is likely today with temperatures likely to hit 25°C.

But the Met Office has warned there is a 50% chance of stormy weather hitting the county by late afternoon.

Temperatures are also expected to cool on Friday, it predicted, before turning warmer again and into Bank Holiday Monday.

Many traders and tourism chiefs had appealed for people to stay away from some of Kent's most popular spots yesterday but the warnings went largely unheeded.

People from as far away as London and Essex were seen basking in the sun at the beach in Whitstable.

One tourist from Brentford in Essex told KMTV that he and his family travelled to the Kent beaches "just for a day out".

He said: "We were supposed to be on holiday this week, that was obviously cancelled because of the virus.

"It's our first day out for a number of weeks now.

"Socially distancing has been tricky, especially on the walkways, but other than that not too bad."
